            Water ; historical  buildings and industrial pollution

The village where we live is between  Kocaeli and Istanbul.These two big cities were established on the edge of the Marmara Sea which is one of  the world's busiest waterways . Istanbul is known as the historic city , and Kocaeli  is know as the industry city. It  gave us a big chance to study  the waterways in two different dimensions .One is water and history ,the other is water and industrial pollution.

The first one is;

Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, constituting the country´s economic, cultural, and historical heart.It is a transcontinental city, the Bosphorus is one of the world´s busiest waterways in northwestern Turkey, between the  Marmara Sea and the Black Sea. It is one of the most significant cities in history. it served as the capital of four empires: the Roman Empire,  the Byzantine Empire,the Latin Empire and the Ottoman Empire . However, the history of Istanbul generally begins around 660 BC, when Greek settlers from Megara established Byzantium on the European side of the Bosphorus. It is primarily known for its Byzantine and Ottoman architecture, but its buildings reflect the various people and empires that have previously ruled the city. Examples of Genoese and Roman architecture remain visible in Istanbul alongside their Ottoman counterparts.

Despite being surrounded by water on three sides, the historical peninsula is actually a waterless region. What makes Istanbul the capital of a water civilization is that the water is brought to the center from the environment since the Roman period . Collection of surrounding water, bringing to Istanbul and distribution  within the city is a huge system and a great organization.    Collection of water from different sources, bringing into the city center by waterways and aqueducts, purification and resting in pools, delivering to the highest point by the water level, distribution water in the city with channels, conveying water to people and other living things by the help of elegance and aesthetics fountains have revealed a tremendous organization and a major cultural, scientific and technical knowledge on water has revealed.

We focused on historical buildings related to water in Istanbulespecially fountains, cisterns and aqueducts in this huge system. There are lots of buildings like those  in there . We tried to choose the best known.We worked on the period they were built, the purpose of construction and we focused on for  what purposes they are used today.

          The second one is;

 Kocaeli is one of the most important industrial and commercial bases of Turkish Economy . Most of the manufactured goods which are either industrial intermediary goods or consumption goods are produced here. Therefore , thereare many industrial zones in the Kocaeli Region.One of them is Dilovası Organized Industrial Zone. There are some ports in there .These ports are used intensively for export and import.

We focused on how effectively the factories in Dilovası  Organized Industrial Zone use the waterways and while doing this, how much harm they do for fauna and flora  and  we worked on the studies to prevent this water pollution .
